Burlesque (2010)

This is really an old fashioned musical with a modern spin on it.  Ali (Christina Aguilera) decides she's tired of her life as a waitress in small town Iowa.  The opening credits are barely over before she's hopping a one-way bus to Los Angeles.  After being rejected at a series of casting calls, she happens upon a burlesque club run by Tess (Cher) and Tess's ex-husband Vince (Peter Gallagher).  A real estate mogul named Marcus (Eric Dane) wants to buy the club.  The club is in deep financial trouble; Vince wants to sell, but Tess does not.

Ali starts as a waitress at the club, catching the eye of bartender/musician Jack (Cam Gigandet).  She forces Tess to give her an audition and Ali becomes one of the dancers.  After a techinical mishap, Ali proves she can sing, too, further fanning the jealousy of Nikki (Kristen Bell), the catty, drunken queen of the show.

Cher only has a couple of songs in this one, but she does fine in a tough, mother hen role.  Christina Aquilera's voice is showcased the most, and she can really sing.  But we've all seen this story too many times before on the late, late show.  Stanley Tucci (Julie and Julia) has some good one liners as Sean, Tess' club manager.  Glynn Turman ("A Different World"), Alan Cummings (Spy Kids) and Diana Agron ("Glee") have small roles.
